Healthy eating can lengthen your life and make it more amenable

Studies have already been done. Did you know that the increase in overweight and obesity in Quito reaches – in adults with figures that go as high as 63%? . Also, studies show that up to 71% of the population is fed outside the home.

It is also known that among food preferences, about 86% consume sugary drinks, 56% fast food and 65% snacks?

Faced with these findings and others that are linked to issues of sustainability, nutrition, resilience, among others, a multiactoral committee was formed in Quito that promotes the strengthening of an agri-food system, to promote a healthy diet, good use of food considered waste, and contribute to responsible consumption and production.

According to a government branch in Quito, these actors belong to civil society, international and national organizations, business groups to public institutions, the Municipality of the Metropolitan District of Quito, through the Secretariat of Productive Development and Competitiveness and the Economic Promotion Agency WithQuito, among others.

This group of people and organizations are actively seeking to identify the vulnerabilities associated with the food system of Quito – and perhaps the entire Ecuadorian region. Thus, it has begun to analyze its exposure to risks, and also to the possible economic, social and environmental impacts.

All this, according to the Quiteño government, will allow adequate planning and the development of policies that guarantee food security and contribute to the well-being of people.

It should be noted, says the report, that food problems need analysis, that must be very detailed and adequately recorded in order to be resolved. This is a complex task that requires a long-term vision to visualize how the food system can be improved and transformed into a social, environmental and economic asset of the city of Quito, Ecuador.

Experts say that this not only helps strengthen the socio-economic fabric of Quito, but also contributes to the development efforts of the city in general.

They say, all this would result in a much healthier population and, therefore, less vulnerable to possible acute impacts. The multi actoral committee is made up of many important organizations.

Quito is getting ready to sign an agreement through the signing of the Food Charter of Quito. This formal agreement will be held in October, close to the commemoration of Habitat III plus II. Several institutions, groups and companies will also sign it.

The report concludes that this initiative would allow the capital of Ecuador, Quito to have a system that includes: production, supply, transportation, logistics, marketing and responsible consumption, avoiding the waste of food.

Live longer, live better, eat well.
